عباس عطار، چهره سرشناس عکاسی خبری و مستند جهان در سن ۷۴ سالگی درگذشت. عباس عطار که در خارج از ایران او را به نام «عباس» می‌شناسند، دانش‌آموخته رشته مطبوعات و ارتباطات در انگلستان بود و از سال ۱۹۷۰ وارد جهان عکاسی خبری حرفه ای شد.
نگاه ویژه و تیزبینانه عباس به جهان پیرامون از دریچه دوربینش، به سرعت در مهمترین مجلات ان روزهای جهان نقش بست. تصویر خیره کننده از جنگ، انقلاب و رویدادهای اجتماعی در بیافرا، ویتنام، کوبا، بنگلادش و گزارش تصویری آپارتاید از آفریقای جنوبی حاصل تلاش ان سالهای عباس بود. با آغاز صدای انقلاب ایران، عباس به مدت ۳ سال مهمترین لحظه های این خیزش را ثبت کرد و در سال ۱۹۸۰ دست به تبعیدی خود خواسته زده و تهران را به مقصد پاریس ترک کرد.

IRAN. Tehran. February 11th 1980. During the celebrations of the first anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, a young man has fainted in the dense crowd.
عاقبت، یک دهه فعالیت چشم گیر عطار و همکاری با آژانس “گاما” و “سیپا” او را به “مگنوم” معتبرترین و مهمترین آژانس عکس مستند و خبری جهان نزدیک کرد. او در سال ۱۹۸۱ به مگنوم پیوست و چهار سال بعد عضو تمام وقت این آژانس شد و همچنین از سال ۱۹۹۸ تا ۲۰۰۱ رئیس دوره‌ای مگنوم بود.
عباس عطار پس از ۱۷ سال دوری از وطن، در سال ۲۰۰۲ و دوران ریاست جمهوری محمد خاتمی، فرصت پیدا کرد تا دوباره به تهران بازگردد که حاصل ان سفر کوتاه، کتابی شد به نام “دفتر خاطرات ایران ۱۹۷۱ – ۲۰۰۲” که نگاهی به شرایط ایران از سال های ۱۹۷۷ تا ۲۰۰۲ دارد. در این کتاب عکس و یادداشت های عباس در کنار هم به چاب رسیده است.
در ۳ دهه پایانی، عطار با نگاه ویژه خودش به موضوع ادیان روی آورد و خودش در اینباره گفته است: « من با مذهب کاری ندارم من با خدا کاردارم. دنبال این هستم که ببینم چرا مردم به خدا عقیده دارند. این برای من مهم است.»
توماس دورزاک (Thomas Dworzak),رئیس آژانس مگنوم در واکنش به درگذشت عباس عطار گفته است:
«او یکی از ستون‌های مگنوم و یکی از حامیان نسل جوان عکاسان خبری بود. یک ایرانی که در پاریس دور از وطنش زندگی می‌کرد و با این‌حال جهان وطن او بود. به همین سبب هم او جهان را با همه جنگ‌هایش و انقلاب‌های و ناآرامی‌ها و فجایع‌اش مستند می‌کرد، در سراسر زندگی‌اش.»
عباس را عکاس عکاسان نامیده‌اند و مجموعه بزرگی از تصاویر تولید شده او، مانند عکس‌های پشت صحنه مسابقه معروف «غرش در جنگل» میان محمد‌علی کلی و جورج فورمن در سال ۱۹۷۴ ، انقلاب ایران در سال ۱۹۷۹، جنگ ایرلند شمالی در اواخر سالهای دهه ۱۹۶۰ ، مبارزات ضد آپارتاید در آفریقای جنوبی از زمره مشهورترین و تحسین برانگیزترین عکس‌های قرن بیستم محسوب می‌شوند.
