Dariush Mehrjui Funeral

خاک سپاری داریوش مهرجویی و وحیده محمدی فر

Yasaman Dehmiyani – Tehran: On October 18, the respected Iranian filmmaker Dariush Mehrjui and his wife, screenwriter Vahideh Mohammadi-Far, were laid to rest amidst mysterious circumstances. Their funeral, attended by many of the country’s renowned artists, took place in the presence of riot police.

The tragic incident unfolded over the weekend at their residence, located approximately 30 kilometers west of Tehran, where the couple was fatally stabbed, as confirmed by Iranian judicial officials on October 15. Mehrjui, aged 83, had gained prominence as a co-founder of Iran’s film new wave during the early 1970s.

Some activists and opposition figures in Iran have drawn parallels between these killings and previous incidents, suggesting a potential connection to political motivations.

Amidst the ceremony in central Tehran, mourners voiced their grief and defiance through slogans such as “Women, life, freedom” and “Murderers, murderers should be disgraced.” Attendees also raised placards that conveyed a subtle critique of the government’s recent assertions of a “state of security,” stating, “In exchange, we have security.”
